I am familiar enough with classic rock and alternative that I can usually play along when playing it for the first time - my ear has an awesome memory! I'm not technically savvy like Flea or Tony Levin - I'm a basic bassist that loves jamming with like minded musicians and experiencing that feeling of harmony, unity and teamwork that you can only get when playing well with others.
