Donovan grew up in a small northern Alberta town (Hines Creek), and began studying music at the age of 10, when he joined the local high school band, first playing saxophone, then drums and percussion.
In 1982, at the age of 12, Donovan moved with his family to Ghana, West Africa. There he fell in love with R&B, jazz, reggae and soul...a passion that has continued to this day. In 1987, Donovan moved back to Canada to finish school, but his love for soul never went away.
In 2008, he started up "Blue Harvest", an acoustic duo, with his guitarist Shug Puto. They have continually worked at expanding their set list, as well as playing live shows whenever possible. He also has participated in the Edmonton Singing Christmas Tree, performing as part of the choir as well as the small ensemble.
In 2011, Donovan finished 10th (out of 60) in the 3rd season of Edmonton Undiscovered. Quite an accomplishment, considering he was the oldest one in the competition!
His voice has been described as powerful as well as soulful, not to mention versatile...moving from one genre to the next: blues, soul, R&B, folk, choral, jazz as well as rock and roll.
