I started out taking bass lessons sometime in high school...and stopped after only two or three of them. Then thirty years or so passed, until I found out that I could teach myself (up to a point) using the internet, watching videos, looking at tabs (I know some of them aren't accurate, but plenty are), etc.
Rented a bass and an amp, not great quality, but good enough to see how well I could teach myself to play and to find out if I had the work ethic to stick with it *this* time. It worked out okay, and I eventually bought a bass and a much better amp (see equipment list for more details).
In the three years since, my commitment to practicing and getting better has been kind of hot and cold. I might go a while practicing regularly, then I'll go through a period where I neglect it, and eventually I'll pick it up again. Never been in an actual band before, or jammed with anybody, but I do realize that inconsistency like that isn't too desirable, so I understand that the hot and cold thing when being part of a band is not an option. Hopefully, I'll have enough fun that I just won't want to take any breaks, and it won't be a problem.
I had taken a bass lesson recently to see what the teacher thought about what I was doing. His impression was basically "You could save yourself some trouble by doing this different, and doing this different, but you're mostly ready to go and find a band." I had planned on seeing if I could meet anybody looking for a bassist (and hopefully I could learn to be better by getting some experience jamming or performing with others, in addition to everything else) at the Moonshine Cafe on open mic nights. But, unfortunately, right now they are closed until 2025, when they open back up at their new location. Which means that if I was going to meet any other musicians, I needed to do something else...and then I found this BandMix site...

Influences
Older stuff mostly. I grew up on G N' R and Def Leppard, got to be a big fan of Motley Crue as well. Teenaged me wanted to be like Nikki Sixx, and the bass was his instrument, so that played a part in me wanting to take bass lessons. I was also discovering Queensryche around this time, and their Empire album has a lot of prominent bass on it, so that's another reason I went with the bass.
Apart from those bands, I'll list a number of random acts whose work I enjoy:
Pink Floyd
Tom Petty
Joan Jett
Whitesnake
George Thorogood
ZZ Top
AC/DC
Alice Cooper
Stevie Ray Vaughan
BTO
Billy Idol
UFO
Scorpions
Boston
The Cars
Cinderella
Poison
The Cult
Van Halen
Deep Purple
Led Zeppelin
Lee Aaron
Helix
April Wine
Dokken
The Doors
Foreigner
Great White
Hot Chocolate
INXS
Iron Maiden (just don't ask me to play like Steve Harris at this point lol)
Motorhead
Joe Satriani
Skynyrd
Ratt
Queen
Rainbow
REO Speedwagon
Robert Palmer
Duran Duran
T.Rex
That's probably enough to give you some idea. :)

EQUIPMENT
I've got a Squier Affinity Jazz bass, hooked up to a Fender Rumble bass amp. There's a lot I still don't know about tech, unfortunately, but this looks to be a Rumble 40. I guess anybody I connect with can tell me if they have any questions, like "Look at this part of the amp and let me know what it says there," and I can...
