20 Original Greatest Hits

The latest album by Calgary artist Rodney Brent is quite a bit like the man himself. It's cool, interesting, unpredictable, funny, sometimes silly and sometimes serious, it showcases a wide array of talent and above all, it's damn quirky. I first met Brent at an exhibit of his art. I was checking out a mandolin that he had painted. He gets around. He's funny and a veritable mad scientist of guitar.

All this is evident on the cheekily-titled 20 Original Greatest Hits. The fact that you won't hear any of these songs on "hit" radio really says more about the pathetically limited scope of that format than it says about these Guitarsplat "hits". Brent plays regularly around town. Go check him out, nab a copy of 20 Original Greatest Hits and have a cool, cool Guitarsplat time.
One of the most eclectic and rewarding releases this year.

A Good Story Is Hard To Find
Rodney Guitarsplat Brent

After winning some studio time via CJSW's funding drive, Rodney recorded a couple of tracks playing all the instruments. One track is a brisk, "bluegrass two-step" called "I Loved You But You Did Not Love Me." A title that definitely speaks for itself. The other is a country blues number, "All Messed Up On Love, Life And Liquor." For Rodney it was about love gone bad, for others it was about licking the last drop of the bottle. As simple as that explanation may sound, the songs resonate like haunting Hank Williams' storylines, and as Rodney claims, they're all about "getting as kicked by love."

Also on the two-song CD are 30 "bonus" tracks culled from Rodney's superb collection of spacey, desert guitar instrumentals.
